The 5 Best Sites for Historic Site and Landmark Tours
If you’re in the mood to travel to the past, check out these five sites that offer tours of some of the most historic landmarks around the world.
1) Pecos National Historical Park
A tour of Pecos National Historical Park offers a glimpse into life as it was hundreds of years ago in what is now New Mexico. This massive site, also known as El Pueblo de los Pecos, once was home to more than 800 Native Americans; today, travelers can visit several centuries-old buildings that once housed those inhabitants.
2) Prarie National Park
If you love history, then consider visiting a historic landmark. You’ll get to experience something from years ago in person, rather than through pictures. Plan a trip to visit Prarie National Park in Nebraska and see some incredible sights from our country’s history. While there, you can walk along segments of old roads, explore abandoned homesteads, or take part in events that are held regularly. Keep an eye out for bears and other wildlife while you’re there!
3) Thaddeus Kosciuszko National Memorial
This national memorial, located in Philadelphia, PA honors Thaddeus Kosciuszko (1746-1817), a Polish engineer who offered his services to America during our country’s fight for independence. The site is run by The National Park Service and provides both guided tours of Independence Hall (Kosciuszko used to sketch here) as well as self-guided historic walking tours throughout Old City Philadelphia. 4) Alcatraz Island (San Francisco, California)
Alcatraz Island, which is located in San Francisco Bay off of San Francisco, California, was used as a military fortress up until 1933. It is most famous for being home to America’s most infamous criminals such as Al Capone and George Machine Gun Kelly. Today, Alcatraz Island is an historic site that has become a favorite tourist attraction. Visitors can take boat tours to tour around its perimeter or take helicopter tours to fly over it from above.
5) Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District
The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields National Historic District encompasses 12 major Civil War battlefields in Virginia, including sites such as Front Royal, Cedar Creek, Port Republic, Waynesboro, Middletown and more. The park offers a full schedule of events from June through October. Visitors can take a battlefield tour led by a ranger or view exhibits at Luray Caverns Visitor Center. It’s also worth noting that Luray Caverns is home to some of America’s most stunning natural formations.
